Is my business on ChatGPT? How to check

Ask what your customers ask, without putting your business name in the question. Then read the recommendation and check its sources.

There is no single yes-or-no answer for every customer. ChatGPT answers can change with wording, location, personalization and time.

This guide shows a manual check in ChatGPT Search. GEO Genius offers a separate model-based check, explained below.

Want a saved starting point?

GEO Genius reads your website and saves 2 web-grounded answers: 1 through OpenAI’s API and 1 through Anthropic’s API.

These are different customer questions, not recordings from the consumer ChatGPT or Claude apps.

1. Write 2 questions a customer would ask

Choose a real service and a city or neighborhood you serve. Avoid “near me”: the answer depends on the searcher’s location.

Do not include your name, website or a competitor. Asking about your named business tests recognition, not an unsolicited recommendation.

Question templates · replace every bracket

Which [type of business] offer [actual service] in [city or neighborhood]? Which [type of business] in [city or neighborhood] have good reviews for [actual service]?

These are templates, not test results. Use the services customers actually buy rather than trying to force a favorable answer.

2. Use Search and reduce personal context

Open ChatGPT and select Search for each question. Use a separate new conversation for each one.

A new conversation alone does not remove saved memory. Review personalization settings and turn off saved context for this check.

State the city explicitly. Approximate location from your internet connection, optional device location and saved context can affect local answers.

ChatGPT Search is available on the Free plan, subject to usage limits. You do not need a paid monitoring subscription.

OpenAI explains Search, citations and location and memory settings. Controls can change, so check those instructions.

3. Read the answer before counting a mention

Does the answer actually recommend your business for that service and location? A passing mention is not the same thing.

Check that the name refers to your business, not another business with a similar name. Verify its website and area.

Open the citations beside relevant claims. The Sources panel can include additional links that are not recommendations.

Check whether the linked page supports the service, location or review claim. An answer can contain incorrect or outdated details.

If your business is absent, record “Not named in this answer.” Do not turn that observation into “ChatGPT never recommends us.”

4. Save the evidence, not a universal rank

Keep the exact question, date, stated location and whether Search was selected. Save the answer and cited links.

Note whether personalization was on and which businesses were recommended instead. Do not include private customer information.

Record template · fill in your own observations

Date: [date] Question: [exact question] Location: [city or neighborhood] Search selected: [yes or no] Personalization: [settings used] Our business: [recommended, mentioned only, or not named] Recommended businesses: [names actually in the answer] Evidence: [saved answer and cited URLs]

Repeat the same questions in fresh conversations later. Compare the actual recommendations and supporting pages, not only a number.

Two answers are a small sample, not a stable ranking or a measure of customer reach. One appearance proves neither.

5. Fix inaccurate public information first

If a citation has old hours, missing services or a wrong website, correct that source where you can.

Make your website’s service area and contact details clear. Keep relevant listings accurate and ask genuine customers for honest reviews.

Our plumber guide shows practical website, listing and review templates. Its general information checks apply beyond plumbing.

Use our honest review-request guide for Google link instructions and neutral templates, without incentives or positive-only invitations.

Changes cannot guarantee a recommendation. An improved answer also does not prove that your edits caused the change.

What the free GEO Score tells you

GEO Genius combines a Site Check with its 2-question AI Test. The Report keeps the tested questions, answers and source links.

It labels the actual engines and shows who was Named Instead. It includes 1 ready-to-paste Fix based on your confirmed details.

The GEO Score is not a ChatGPT ranking. Our API-based answers do not establish what every customer sees in ChatGPT Search.

Open the labelled sample Report to see the format before checking your own website.
